What happens when you finally stop striving, stop trying to control every outcome, and fully surrender to God?

In this episode of the Intentional Breakthrough Podcast, Charity sits down with Janelle Baty to hear her powerful story of faith, surrender, healing, and breakthrough. Janelle shares about walking through loss, single motherhood, toxic patterns, broken relationships, fear, striving, and the lies that tried to shape her identity.

But through it all, she discovered a life-changing truth: God is good no matter what life looks like.

This conversation is for anyone who feels stuck in control, afraid to let go, or unsure if God can really be trusted with the details of their life. Janelle’s testimony is a reminder that surrender is not giving up — it is making room for God to open doors, heal wounds, and speak truth over who you really are.

The goodness of God is even if something doesn't go the way that you think that it is, even if your plans don't happen, or even if this person walks away, or um uh it's kind of like my my mantra right now is um no matter what life looks like, God is good. So, you know, if I I've you know had loss in my life, I've had a lot of things I've had to grieve over the years, and the goodness of God to me is Him walking with me through it all, no matter what that looks like. The good, the bad, the ugly. It literally is just okay, God, I trust you. I may not know what it looks like, I may not know where I'm going, I don't know who's gonna be alongside me through it, but I trust you, and you are good no matter what. To me, that's pretty much what the goodness of God is is just leaning into I don't care what life looks like anymore. If you take me tomorrow, you're still good. If you take my child tomorrow, you're still good.

SPEAKER_03

Now, how did you get to that point? Because that's a tough place to get to. Um, because life isn't always good. I hope you enjoyed this week's episode. Welcome to the Intentional Breakthrough Podcast. Today I get the honor of interviewing Janelle. I am so excited, Janelle, that you can be on this show. Janelle is just this amazing woman of God that I met um not that long ago. And it was such a fun meeting because we immediately just connected right away about how good God is and how awesome he is, and just what we've seen him do in our life, in your life, and our family. And that's like the best way to connect with someone, I think. So I just wanted to have you on here and talk about that a little bit more because I loved hearing your story and just the honesty of um of what he's been doing in your life and what he has done. So just for a brief intro, Janelle is an awesome, God-fearing mom of three. Um, she's an intercessor and she's walking out this journey with purpose and intention. And I love that. So, Janelle, when we met, we immediately just started talking about the goodness of God. And um, what's really funny is that we actually met at nighttime and there was so like the lights were off. And so we just started talking. We're in this room together, we just started talking and we connected so I felt like so deeply and so like really like and we didn't even know what each other looked like until the next day. And then I saw you the next day. I was like, Janelle, like how you were friends. I just need to know what you look like. So it was a fun way to meet. Um, but when we met, we started talking about the goodness of God and how you've seen him work in your life. And I would love you just to speak more about that just from the heart, um, from your perspective and just what what you've noticed him doing. Sure.

SPEAKER_02

Uh, you know, that could take five years. Um we'll just dwindle it down a little bit. Uh since I was a kid, I have always felt the presence of God. Um, was I walking with him? No. I didn't really get saved until I was 18. I went to a high school camp that my grandma at the time had paid for. And it was just kind of out of boredom, you know, make some new friends, figure out what to do, radically changed my life, uh, put me down this path of figuring out who God is as my father. My dad died when I was 20. And um, so many things that I had done to myself prior, and I say to myself, um, just like willful sin, willful disobedience, not living a life for Christ at all. And so um just figuring out what that looked like. My grandma was a missionary and she was a very, very, very faithful woman of God. She taught in the church. Um I it's it's sad to look back now that she's gone because I didn't take advantage of her, you know, wisdom when I should have, could have. Um so I carry kind of that same spirit. So she's always been the one that was praying for us, that was interceding for us. And that's kind of the heart that I have that I know God's implanted in me just through her prayers. Um, so fast forward, you know, I'm in my 40s, and I I would say the year before COVID, 2019, is when things really started to shift. So um I my job was moving me to Arizona from San Diego. I'm from San Diego, and I had to move my kids. It was like a whole ordeal. The courts didn't want me to. And I remember as I was moving out here, I ended up being able to come with my kids. It was kind of a whole story, but um, for a different time. Uh, so I was able to move out here. I was driving in the U-Haul and I was just praying and I was like, God, I'm gonna include you in every decision that I make, whether it's good, whether it's bad. You know, I just I it was just this intentionality that I took in that moment of, you know, I'm not gonna be hot or cold anymore. I'm literally just gonna be on. Um, and so from that moment on, I just poured everything that I in had into him. Um still so imperfect. Um so with a lot of my decisions, uh I became more intentional of I don't know if this is the right decision, but I'm just gonna make it anyway. And I need you to work it out for me or close the door or whatever that looks like. And so a lot of times I kind of stepped out on faith and um didn't really know what to do, or I didn't hear the Holy Spirit and I didn't know where to go. But me pressing in and just saying, okay, God, I trust you. Whatever it is that you have for me, I'm just gonna walk in that way and I'm gonna put myself out there. I'm not gonna be afraid, I'm just gonna go. So it really put me on this path of uh what do I want for my life? What do I want for my children? What do I want for uh, you know, a legacy, right? You know, it's not about me, it's about Christ. But what am I doing for him? We're in this life temporarily. And um, yeah. So I I have seen the goodness of God, I think, more in this last season of my life, probably more than any other season of my life. And I'm sure we'll get into that in a minute. But um, yeah, I don't know if that's gonna be. Describe that.

SPEAKER_03

What is no, describe the the goodness of God you said. And I what does that mean? Like, like what break that down into details. If someone that's a very broad general statement, and I totally understand, but like, what does it actually mean? What does it look like?

SPEAKER_02

The goodness of God is even if something doesn't go the way that you think that it is, even if your plans don't happen, or even if this person walks away, or um uh it's kind of like my my mantra right now is um no matter what life looks like, God is good. So, you know, if I I've you know had loss in my life, I've had a lot of things I've had to grieve over the years, and the goodness of God to me is Him walking with me through it all, no matter what that looks like. The good, the bad, the ugly. It literally is just okay, God, I trust you. I may not know what it looks like, I may not know where I'm going, I don't know who's gonna be alongside me through it, but I trust you and you are good no matter what. To me, that's pretty much what the goodness of God is is just leaning into I don't care what life looks like anymore. If you take me tomorrow, you're still good. If you take my child tomorrow, you're still good.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, how did you get to that point? Because that's a tough place to get to. Um, because life isn't always good, yeah. And we're taught God is all powerful, all control, you know, he's in in in charge. So when these really difficult things that are not good happen, it's difficult, it's a it's a wrestling, you know, you have to wrestle through that. So how did you get to that place?

SPEAKER_02

A lot of surrender moments. I think sometimes um when you become the when you come to the end of yourself, there's a little piece of wisdom that you learn in that journey. And so for me, because I had failed and still fail, but because I had failed so many times, it was like I was failing forward. So I wasn't shaming myself. I wasn't sitting in this woe is me kind of thing. It was like, okay, God, what can I take from this and what can I learn? What can I grow? What can how can I steward this? And so it was like it was obedience to obedience. It really was. So for me, it was like understanding I'm not perfect, I'm not gonna be perfect, I need Jesus. Like that is the answer. And so if I mess up, I'm just gonna repent, ask for forgiveness, and just keep moving. And so I I really feel like the simplicity of scaling things back in that sense really grew my faith so that I could view God through a different lens. And that grew my faith. And then it was easier to make decisions. I quit drinking two years ago, didn't necessarily have anything wrong with it, but um, it was just, you know, asking the Holy Spirit, what do you want me to give up next? What is it that you want an area of my life? And the more that I surrender, absolutely, 100%. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So it's like a this there was that moment where you just said that this is it, like I'm all in, that moment of surrender. And then it was like step by step, and he and just continuing to like surrender more and more, the more closer you got to him, the more he drew you closer. And in that process, it's like you saw more and more clearly that he was good. Yep. So would you say, was there like a moment you just had that revel like revelation that he's good, or was it just that journey over time? It grew more and more.

SPEAKER_02

It's it's definitely a journey. Um, but like I said, I'm kind of in this season right now where I've seen God move more. Um, and maybe that's just through my peripheral. Um but toward the end of last year, there were still some things that I was holding on to, right? So like um I had let go of a relationship in February of last year, and I was in a toxic job environment. And so um last year was a very pivotal year for me to just kind of like let go of all of these toxic things that I was still holding on to. And the job was kind of the last piece. So I got let go from my job at the end of November. And as soon as I lost my job, I felt the favor of God. Like I just knew that he was protecting me, that he was removing me, and that something fresh and new was about to happen. Didn't know what it was, you know, yeah. So I would yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So why just like speaking to that a little bit? Why is it, why do you think it's hard for people to let go of toxic things? Like they know they're not very good for them, but it's hard to let go. Why do you think that is?

SPEAKER_02

I think for me, speaking, um, real frankly and honestly, is living in sin for so long. Um, these are just patterns and behaviors that are comfortable. And it's really hard to deny your flesh. It just is, you know. Um, we want what's comfortable, you know. We don't immediately turn to, I'm gonna turn around and deny my flesh and do something opposite of what I want to do. No, I want to eat the good things. I wanna, you know, not not that there's anything wrong with food, but you know, um I I wanna, I don't drink anymore, but what's the big deal? I can still go to a bar with my friends or um, you know, just like little compromises, I think. And I just have noticed that when I am surrendering those thoughts, ideas, patterns to the Lord, He is renewing them and He is giving me and replacing new things with those.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So it that surrender, I think that seems to be a key word here. Surrender is what star uh brought a lot of change in your life. It sounded like a little step by step of surrender. But surrender is hard if you don't trust. Like you need to tr trust what you're surrendering to, right? Absolutely. So how talk about that? Like what how how did you grow into that place of being able to trust the Lord? That's a good question.

SPEAKER_02

I would say reading my word, that is a really big one. Um, knowing what he says in through Jesus uh is really important. That's kind of grown my faith a lot. Um, but I really feel like through a lot of circumstances of letting go because I can't control them. So I'm I naturally want to control narratives or um, you know, what life could look like or how my children are gonna act or um just certain, you know, how work is gonna treat me, you know, it's just the list goes on and on.

SPEAKER_03

Um and I think that's a natural control's a natural response to fear, right?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, absolutely. So okay, so yeah, keep talking about that. Yeah. So the more that I found myself reaching for control and reaching for these things, it just felt uncomfortable because when when you're pursuing righteousness and when you are cultivating the Holy Spirit and that is your daily bread and that is what you're doing, these things become so uncomfortable for you. And so it just became easier, and I say easier, it's not necessarily easy, but it just became easier over time and over the journey that you know, just I was able to let go and and cultivate that in this season.

SPEAKER_03

It became yeah, maybe more attractive to start trusting God. Absolutely. It looked like such a scary, awful thing. It was like, oh, maybe that's maybe he's trustworthy. Maybe this can be good on the other side.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, absolutely.

SPEAKER_03

Um so what what has God been doing in your life? Like how have you been seeing his goodness and faithfulness play into your life? Sure.

SPEAKER_02

It really is a heart posture. Okay. Um, I still have so many areas of my life where, you know, like my children and um you know, I'm I've been a single mom for as long as I've had them for, you know, most of their life. And I carry around a lot of um, I wouldn't say anxiety, but just um, you know, are they making the right decisions? Um, you know, some control aspects in that way. And uh my daughter who is 22 now, um, I had pretty much adopted her by the age of seven. And so it was kind of hard to cultivate those spaces, but you know, over time and just moving through and choosing my daughter, choosing to, you know, like trust. Um, but in these spaces of not knowing what um is anything looks like with my mom. So my mom has been an alcoholic and an addict for a really long time, and she's still, you know, struggling. So for me, that has been really difficult to, I don't want to say come to terms because I feel like the Lord has shown me that this is temporary, like my home is not here. And I know that my mom loves the Lord, and so this is, you know, temporary suffering. So it brings me peace to know that uh she she will be in heaven, you know, no more pain, no more suffering, no more tears, all of that. Um but this season for me specifically, the surrender looked like I don't care what anything looks like. I don't care if I have a relationship, I don't care if I lose another job, I don't care if I get a job, I don't, it was the it was the mentality and the heart posture of um, I only want what you want. Only like I need you to present these things to me. I don't want to be in that um decision-making. I mean, there are times obviously we need to steward, you know, like we have to step out on faith and we have to make decisions. Um, but this last season, it was like, I'm not gonna move until you move me. I'm not gonna move until you open a door and you clearly make it plain that this is where I'm supposed to go. So um, so yeah, I think that was the shift for me and how, you know, I had just I've been learning surrender, I had been letting go of things. I, you know, I had quit drinking, I let go of this relationship last year. Yeah. Um, the work with the toxicity of it. Um, you know, I think we innately just want to hold on to toxicity because we're used to it. We're not used to the good things, we're used to the toxic. And so we gravitate toward that. And I, my whole entire life was just, you know, whether I did it to myself or, you know, circumstances had happened to me younger, whatever. Um, you know, there's consequences to everything. So, you know, you're just figuring out how to cultivate that. So in this season, it's just been a lot of trusting him to open the door, trusting him to speak to me and to make things clear.

SPEAKER_03

So when I talk with you, you just talked about all this breakthrough that you're experiencing in your life. And it sounds like it really stemmed from coming to that place of just surrender, like just surrender. Like, I'm not going to control anymore. I'm just going to surrender and just trust the Lord. And like it was so beautiful hearing your heart about it because it it was just, it's just, it's apparent. It's apparent that you really are in this place of just peace, of just peace and surrender and just trusting the Lord. But it's so interesting because it's like in that let go, in that letting go of control and just falling into that peace and that surrender and that trust, he began to open up so many doors and so many ways in your life and opportunities you didn't even see coming. And it's just, it seems kind of opposite, right? It seems like the more I strive and try to do something and try to control things, the more I can make happen. And it's the opposite. Yeah. It's like when that broke. And you you use the phrase, when you came to the end of yourself, it's like, I got nothing left. God, this is all up to you. I'm just gonna trust you and let go of control and surrender. That's when breakthrough happened. That's when doors opened up. Yep. That is so cool. How has this season then of that, like just it walking through that of what when you came to the end of yourself and you finally gave up? That's when God opened up so many new opportunities in your life. How do speak into what that shows you about God's character? Like what aspects of his character does that reveal?

SPEAKER_02

God is love. And love is not um butterflies and comfort, even though it does offer that. Um, you know, love is patient, love is kind. So when I think about the attribute, attributes of God and I think of how he's loved me over the years, it just makes me want to love others and even love him through that lens of being patient, being kind, being all, you know, figuring out what that looks like. You know, I'm not a saint, I'm not perfect, I don't want to be perfect. What do I need Jesus for if I am, you know? Um, but yeah, in this surrender season, I'm starting to see some of those fruits, which is crazy because um, you know, I can look back in seasons and say, oh yeah, like God totally protected me from that. Or um, you know, these moment-by-moment decisions have led me to where I am today. Um, but in this specific season, because of the surrender, because I was like, I don't care what anything looks like, I trust you no matter what the decision is. I will go wherever you want me to go. All of these doors started opening for me. So um I met my boyfriend who is amazing. That's kind of a whole story in itself, but um, just God completely, we've known each other for a couple of years. We go to church together, and our eyes were just like open to each other, like just one day. And um, I've seen God just do such beautiful things in his leadership over me and how he loves me and my children, and how we're kind of like building intentionally. So that's one, you know, I've I've had a struggle and issues in my past with relationships and you know, insecurity and not knowing, you know, am I ever gonna have this beautiful man of God that I've been praying for that I'm and I think that the moment that I was able to just surrender and say, okay, God, I don't care. If this man doesn't come, I'm okay because I have you. And it was literally like weeks and you know, crazy. It was like, okay, okay, I get it. Yeah. Um, and then, you know, I had walked away or I had got let go from my job. And um, I just was like, I had so much peace. And I was like, you're gonna take care of me, you're gonna figure it out. And one day I applied for this one job and I was like, I'm probably not qualified. I I don't know if I'm qualified, but I'm just gonna do it anyway. So if you want to open the door, cool. If you don't, I'm okay. I'll figure something else out. And sure enough, I got the job and it is way bigger than myself. Um, so I'm sitting in this season of wow, God, like you really moved on my behalf, and I A, don't deserve any of it. Um, and B wow, like I couldn't even imagine this for myself six months ago. So yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's it's crazy how yeah, control seems to be more trustworthy than God, but it really isn't.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Um, have you ever heard the phrase it's safer to be outside of the boat with Jesus than inside of the boat without him? Oh my gosh. References Peter when he was in the boat and it was a storm and Jesus is walking on water, and Peter said, Jesus, if it's you, tell me to come out to you. And Jesus said, It's I come come out. And Peter got to walk on water a little bit towards Jesus. And of course, you know, he we all know the story, he ended up sinking. And falling and Jesus saves him. But it's still safer to be outside of the boat in the storm with Jesus than inside of the boat with Adam. And I always think of that boat as kind of control. It's like doing what you what you think is safe, what in your small little world, what looks to be safe. It's actually not safe if that's not where Jesus is. And so um you said something really interesting too when we talked before. And you said you started talking about like, well, I think I was asking that when did this journey all start? Like sure. And you started talking about how when you noticed that there was a lie that you had believed. Can you talk more about that?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, um, I guess I would say probably in my 20s, um, I got married when I was 25. And um there was a lot that had happened in that marriage, a lot of deception, a lot of lies, a lot of manipulation. Um it was kind of turned back on me a little bit to where like I'm the crazy one. It just it it was kind of crazy. So I kind of walked out of that situation, um, hurt, not really trusting the Lord, um, thinking, you know, like this person was a man of God and this is what they did to me, kind of thing. Um so I, you know, I walked away from from God for a while. And um you build these wounds and these calluses and this hardness. And I just remember um crying one day. I was sick and uh I was with my mom. She was like a a moment of soberness for her. She was sober for maybe like six years in my 20s. And I I remember just laying my head on her lap, and she was just like stroking my head and I was crying, and she was like praying over me. And I had this vision of that was Jesus. So like my head is in Jesus' lap and he's comforting me. Um, and so I think little by little, I the more that I was in my word, the more that I was around community, the more um that I started replacing the lie with truth, is that, you know, because when you get divorced, um the enemy wants to tell you that you're no good and you're no better than anybody else and that you can't be redeemed. And um, you know, my story is still even full of another divorce, which is later on down the road with my kid's dad. So that's kind of a whole nother thing. Um, so I feel like the enemy will take these things that have happened to you to um tell you you're not good enough to um make you believe these lies. And so even just in the relationships that I've had, you know, being sitting where I am today and having this beautiful man of God that loves me and loves my children and wants to build a life with me. Um, I think it's just it's surrender, it's trust, and it's not caring about the outcome, honestly. It's like, if this didn't happen, I mean, I love that it did, but if it didn't, I'm still okay. Like God is still good. God is still on the throne. So I think, you know, replacing the lies is just bringing in more truth, understanding that God is good and all of the beautiful things that He's done, um, not comparing yourself to others. I did that very heavily early on in my walk, where it was just like, God, why do these people have these husbands who love you and, you know, provide and do all these things? And here I am, single mom struggling with three kids, working two jobs. And I just was like bitter and I was angry and I was frustrated. And I just learned, you know, just the more that I was able to let go and to trust God, all of those things just kind of shed off, you know.

SPEAKER_03

Because there are there are there are lies at a root of a lot of those feelings, like that you're not worthy or you don't deserve it, or there's something wrong with you. Like there's like little lies at the roots of all those thoughts, you know, and those feelings. And so it's I guess getting to the truth of that, truth of who you are in Christ, your identity in Christ. Yeah, those are all just lies. It almost like lifts them off of you so you don't have to like bear them anymore. But I feel like in that lifting off, you become free too. You're not only are the burdens off and you feel lighter, like you know, more free, but you can walk in freedom and walk in a better, a greater place of authority. Um, I just remember something you said about though, like this this season that you're in right now, and like it was just like a year or two ago, and a friend spoke truth to you.

SPEAKER_02

Do you remember that? I do.

SPEAKER_03

And that was kind of like a turning point.

SPEAKER_02

What was that? Um, okay, so I I'm a striver, I'm a doer. Like, um, I think my biggest fear is getting to heaven and God saying, I didn't know you, or you didn't do, you know, like um that's been like huge and heavy on my heart. And um, my friend had told me, she was like, Janelle, you are not a vindictive person. Like you are full of love, you are full of grace, you are full of um God's light and intention. So it doesn't matter what you do because you're not, you don't have evil intentions. So just know that whatever it is that you choose, whatever it is that happens, it's okay, it's gonna be okay. Like you can bring, you don't have to make the right decision. You don't have to be in the right space at the right time always. Because it's in Romans 8.28, God is going to use all of those things that we've been through to put us exactly where we need to be. And um, yeah, so her just it's like, it's like something broke from childhood, from my 20s, from this lie that I had believed um about, you know, just who I am and what I can provide and just all being a single mom and so broken and all these things. And I just was like, oh, am I making the right decision? Should I do this? Should I do that? Should I not do this? Is this gonna affect my children? Is this gonna, I just was like plagued with um fear and anxiety. And she was like, Janelle, you love people. You are full of God's love. So just relax and it's all gonna work out. And so it just those simple words for her to say, just like everything broke off. And I was able to see things through a new lens. And I was like, you're right. Like I'm not out here just making dumb decisions. Like, sure, maybe at times, but my heart is not that. That's not my heart posture.

SPEAKER_03

So it's almost like it shifted everything that your identity is already set. It's who you are. It's not about what defined by what you do.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

When you feel like your identity identity is defined by what you do, we fall into striving and to control and to fear, all those things. But it's like something shifted. And it's like, no, your identity is set no matter what. It doesn't matter what you do.

SPEAKER_01

I know.

SPEAKER_03

Like you, who you are is who God created you to be, and it shines through every day. And she could see that, and it's like then you're like you're able to live free from all of that, the striving and everything, you know? And and so that was kind of something broken you. So just summarize quickly, like that broke, and then what was the difference after that?

SPEAKER_02

I think that I was able to see things more clearly. So when you think about the veil in the temple, right before Jesus died on the cross, it's like you had to approach God through a temple. You had to, you know, go to a priest, or you know, there were rituals and things that you had to do. And so although I had a relationship with the Lord and I was learning what that looked like, it was almost like this veil got lifted and it was like, it all makes sense. Like I can't, I can't explain it. Like it, it just it was this defining moment in my life that I can definitely look back. And if people were to be like, you know, what what are like three moments of your life that, you know, you saw God move and, you know, that would absolutely be number one is getting rid of all of this junk that I think that I have to be, and just realizing that my heart and my intentions and everything that I do is out of love. So even if I make the wrong decision, it's okay. So yeah, because your identity is set. Absolutely. Yeah.

I love that. There's freedom that comes from the truth. John 832 says, You'll know the truth and the truth will set you free. And you got the truth in that moment and you began to walk free. It started, it just it's like started to trickle into all aspects of your life and everything starts to shift to reflect that truth. Yeah, because that's what you are knowing and agreeing with now in your heart. It it really starts in the heart. It's like when we become free in our heart, it starts to you know spread outward into the rest of our life. Janelle, thank you so much for being on here today. I'm so glad to get the chance to interview you. And I feel like we just touched the surface, but I really appreciate you um anytime. Yeah, just share being willing to share and being on here. First, I loved it. Thank you for cultivating this space.
